Minimals, the easiest step up
A minimal (or mini-mal) is a cut-down longboard, usually around 7ft to 8ft, wide and stable with plenty of foam. It is the board most Kiwis improve on once they are off the foamie, with the paddle power to catch waves early at gentle beaches like Orewa, Mount Maunganui and Mangawhai.
Why they are easier to learn on
The width and volume make popping up easier, so you catch more waves and build confidence faster. When you are ready for more performance, a midlength is the natural next step.
