Surfboard fins

Surfboard fins are one of the easiest ways to fine-tune how your board feels - more hold, more drive, looser turns, or extra speed down the line. Whether you’re replacing a snapped fin, building a new setup, or experimenting with a different template, the right fins can make a noticeable difference from your first paddle-out.

Choose your fin system first

Before anything else, match fins to your board’s fin boxes. The two most common systems you’ll see are FCS and Futures, and they generally aren’t interchangeable - your board’s fin boxes decide what you can run.

Pick a setup that matches your surfing

Most surfers start with a familiar configuration and adjust from there:

  • Thruster (3 fins): a balanced feel for everyday surfing.
  • Quad (4 fins): often chosen for speed and down-the-line drive.
  • Twin / Twin: a looser, faster feel, popular in small-to-medium surf.
  • Single / centre fin: the classic feel for longboards and cruisy lines.

Fin size and flex also matter. As a general guide, larger fins add stability and hold, while smaller fins feel looser and easier to pivot, and beginners often prefer a touch more stability while learning.

Complete your surf setup

Once your fins are sorted, round out the essentials: a surfboard leash, boardbag, and deckpad & wax for grip and transport. NZ Boardstore also highlights NZ-wide delivery and a 14-day hassle-free returns guarantee on-site.

How do I know if I need FCS or Futures fins?
Check your board’s fin boxes, FCS and Futures are different systems and typically require system-matched fins. If you’re not sure, a photo of the fin boxes is enough to confirm. Surf Station Store
Are FCS fins compatible with Futures boxes (or vice versa)?
In general, no, these systems are not designed to cross-fit. Match fins to your fin boxes.
What’s the difference between a thruster and a quad setup?
Thrusters are the “all-rounder” setup many surfers stick with; quads are commonly chosen when surfers want more speed and drive down the line (board + waves still matter).
What fin size should I choose?
Use the brand’s size chart (usually based on rider weight), then adjust based on how you surf. Beginners often like a bit more fin area for stability while progressing. Unsure? Speak to our experts at NZ Boardstore.
Do fins really make a noticeable difference?
es, fins affect stability, turning feel, speed generation and hold. Small changes in template or size can be felt, especially once you’ve surfed the same board consistently.
What’s a centre fin used for?
Centre (single) fins are commonly used on longboards and single-fin setups, and also appear as the rear fin in some 2+1 configurations.
Do I need tools to install fins?
Some fins/systems use grub screws and an allen key; others may use tool-less mechanisms. Always follow the product instructions for your system.
How do I look after fins?
Rinse with fresh water after salt/sand exposure, keep screws from rusting, and avoid leaving gear baking in a hot car for long periods.
